Mazda 2: Front Axle
FRONT AXLE LOCATION INDEX
- Hub bolt
- Wheel hub, steering knuckle
WHEEL HUB, STEERING KNUCKLE INSPECTION
Wheel Bearing Play Inspection
1. Position a dial gauge with a magnetic base against the wheel hub as shown, and measure the wheel bearing axial play.
- If it exceeds the specification, replace the wheel bearing.
Front axle maximum wheel bearing play
- 0.05 mm {0.002 in}
WHEEL HUB, STEERING KNUCKLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
1. Remove in the order indicated in the table.
2. Install in the reverse order of removal 3. After installation, inspect the front wheel alignment. (See FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT).
- Locknut
- Brake caliper component
- Disc plate
- Bolt (ABS wheel-speed sensor)
- Bolt (lower end of shock absorber)
- ABS wheel-speed sensor
- Tie-rod end
- Front lower arm ball joint
- Wheel hub, steering knuckle component
Brake Caliper Component Removal Note
1. Remove the brake hose installation bolt and brake caliper installation bolts.
2. Remove the brake caliper component, and suspend it using wire.
Bolt (ABS Wheel-Speed Sensor) Removal Note
1. Remove the ABS wheel-speed sensor installation bolt, then remove the ABS wheel-speed sensor from the steering knuckle.
ABS Wheel-Speed Sensor Removal Note
1. Disconnect the steering knuckle from the shock absorber.
2. While pressing the tabs (2 locations) of the ABS wheel-speed sensor wiring harness clip, remove the ABS wheel-speed sensor wiring harness from the shock absorber.
3. Remove the ABS wheel-speed sensor wiring harness grommet from the shock absorber.
4. Move the ABS wheel-speed sensor to a place out of the way.
Wheel Hub, Steering Knuckle Component Installation Note
1. Apply grease (L2Y1 33247) to the wheel bearing inner race and drive shaft contact surface (Area A in figure).
2. Install the wheel hub, steering knuckle component.
ABS Wheel-Speed Sensor, Bolt (Lower End Of Shock Absorber), Bolt (ABS Wheel-Speed Sensor) Installation Note
1. Install the steering knuckle to the shock absorber, insert the bolts from the direction shown as follows, then tighten them to the specified torque.
- Vehicle left side: Insert the bolts from the vehicle rear.
- Vehicle right side: Insert the bolts from the vehicle front.
2. Install the ABS wheel-speed sensor wiring harness grommet to the shock absorber as shown in the figure.
3. Install the ABS wheel-speed sensor wiring harness clip to the shock absorber.
4. Install the ABS wheel-speed sensor to the steering knuckle, then tighten the bolt (ABS wheel-speed sensor) to the specified torque.
5. Verify that the ABS wheel-speed sensor wiring harness is not twisted.
WHEEL HUB, STEERING KNUCKLE DISASSEMBLY/ASSEMBLY
1. Disassembly in the order indicated in the table.
- Wheel hub component
- Snap ring
- Wheel bearing
- Dust cover
- Steering knuckle
- Hub bolt
2. Assembly in the reverse order of removal.
Wheel Hub Component Disassembly Note
1. Remove the wheel hub component using the SSTs.
2. If the bearing inner race remains on the front wheel hub component, perform the following procedures.
When not using the SST
1. Grind a section of the bearing inner race until approx. 0.5 mm {0.02 in} remains.
2. Remove the bearing inner race using a chisel.
When using the SST
1. Position the SSTs and a spare bolt (M10) as shown in the figure.
CAUTION:
- When tightening section A, tighten section B securely because the engagement of the SST tab is shallow and it can come off easily.
2. Tighten the A, and disassemble the bearing inner race.
Wheel Bearing Disassembly Note
1. Remove the wheel bearing from the steering knuckle using the SSTs.
Dust Cover Disassembly Note
NOTE:
- The dust cover does not need to be removed unless it is being replaced.
1. Mark the dust cover and steering knuckle for proper installation.
2. Remove the dust cover using a chisel.
Wheel Hub Bolt Disassembly Note
NOTE:
- The hub bolts do not need to be removed unless they are being replaced.
1. Remove the wheel hub bolts from the wheel hub using a press.
Wheel Hub Bolt Assembly Note
1. Install new wheel hub bolts using a press.
Dust Cover Assembly Note
1. Mark the new dust cover in the same way as the removed one.
2. Align the marks of the new dust cover and the knuckle.
3. Install the new dust cover using the SSTs.
Wheel Bearing Assembly Note
NOTE:
- Install the wheel bearing with the ABS encoder (identification color: pink) facing inside of the vehicle.
1. Install a new wheel bearing using the SSTs.
Wheel Hub Component Assembly Note
1. Install the steering knuckle to the wheel hub component using the SSTs.
FRONT WHEEL HUB BOLT REPLACEMENT
1. Remove the brake caliper component and disc plate.
2. Remove the wheel hub bolt using the SST as shown in the figure.
3. Place a new wheel hub bolt in the wheel hub.
4. Install the wheel hub bolt by placing a proper sized washer on the hub, and tightening the nut as shown.
